New Hope Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina

The following pictures are from the restoration project.
Click the small pictures to view the larger image.

New Hope Baptist Church Original Santuary

This church is over 170 years old. Located in Raliegh North Carolina.

This picture was taken before the work began.

My job was to supervise its restoration/renovation.

New Hope Baptist Church Original Santuary

This is another view of the church before the work began.

New Hope Baptist Church Original Santuary

A close up shot of the side entrance before work began.

This picture gives you a good feel for existing conditions and the amount of work needed.

Front Windows Before Restoration Began

This is a shot of the main window units at the front of the church. They will be replaced to match the original with the addition of stained glass in the triple unit at the center.

New Hope Baptist Church Original Santuary Interior

This is a shot of the inside of the original santuary.

Again this shot was taken before work began.

Work Begins

This is the side entrance showing the work begining with the total replacement of all exterior wood moldings and trim.

Work Progresses To The Bell Tower

This shows the scaffolding erected at the bell tower and the cedar shake shingles have been removed.

The original blueprints for this building show stucco where the cedar shakes are now.

Bell Tower

In this shot you can see how the original louver had a new arched molding applied over it to change it's appearance.

The cedar shakes were then applied over the top corners of the louver.

Rear Gable

This shows the rear of the building where asbestoes siding was removed and will be replaced with stucco to match the original drawings of the building.

Notice the flower shaped louver in the middle that was behind the asbestoes siding. It will be replicated and incorporated into the new stucco finish.

Bell Tower And Front Windows

This is a shot of the finished bell tower with the new louver and stucco completed.

The workers are begining to remove the front windows to replace them.

Main Window Unit

Removing the main window unit is a job. The arch you see here does not go all the way through the wall. Instead the three smaller arches will be the only ones to show on the inside.

Note the use of tongue and grove 1x4s to make up the original pannel.

Main Window

After the arched pannel was removed you can now see the original wood lap siding.

The brick veneer was applied during a later renovation.

Inside Out

This shot is taken from inside the church looking out through the remaining hole after removing the main window unit.

Note the three arches instead of the large one prevelant on the exterior.

New Window Unit

This is the new window unit ready to be installed.

Flooring Repairs

This is some of the repair work being done to the pine floors before they will be refinished.

Main Santuary Under Construction

This is a shot of the santuary during construction.

Note the new HC ramp on the left and the reconfiguration of the steps.

The New Stained Glass

This is taken from inside showing the completed main window unit. Also note the adjacent windows have been replaced as have all the windows in the church.

Stained Glass Close Up

This is a close up of the center panel of stained glass showing better detail.
